PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION
What is professional supervision?
Supervision is an investment in your personal wellbeing and professional longevity. The process of supervision resources professionals (supervisees) to explore the ongoing question – how can I better attend to my work by attending to my wellbeing? Your experiences become the teacher, and the learning is applied to your professional journey.
Supervision is a safe space to unpack the complexities of your role, the uniqueness of your context and their impact on your soul. The supervision process helps to keep professionals in a resourced and creative space.
Supervisees are the central focus of professional supervision. Professional Supervisors are the facilitators of the supervisee's reflective learning. Supervisors accompany supervisees on their journey of ongoing professional growth. Supervision is for the supervisee but casts its glance towards those that the supervisee practitioner impacts in their professional practice. The decisions we make in our professional lives affect other people.
What is the difference between individual and group supervision?
Supervision occurs in two ways – individual supervision (supervisor and supervisee) and group supervision. Individual supervision sessions are 50 minutes to 1 hour in length. Group supervision is most often the supervisor and at least 4 supervisees. These sessions are 2 hours in length. These arrangements vary across organisations and their requirements.
How is Professional Supervision different from Clinical Supervision?
Clinical supervision focuses on cases at work; professional supervision focuses on the soul, role and context of the professional in their work and how that impacts the people they work with and for.
As professional supervision is used to facilitate the reflection of the supervisee on their work, the supervisee needs a skilled supervisor, but the supervisor does not need industry-specific knowledge to supervise effectively. A skilled supervisor will not need to have experience in your industry to supervise you effectively.
Clinical supervision is embedded within the culture and practice of professions such as general and specialist medicine, where less experienced doctors would receive supervision by those with more knowledge and experience. Cases are bought to clinical supervision that required expert knowledge, skill and experience within the specific profession. The consultation within their clinical environment was a mentoring and development tool for younger doctors. Counseling and psychology are examples of industries where supervision is required by a person with specific knowledge and qualifications within their industry.
Professional supervision does not have to be conducted by a supervisor with specialist knowledge in your professional field.
How is supervision facilitated?
Individual and Group Supervision are facilitated in several ways. These include:
- Face-to-face
- Online using video conferencing software
- By phone
- A combination of the above
- Walking supervision sessions in a public space (for Individuals only where appropriate and agreed upon).
